Self-Reflexivity in philosophy is the potential of the modern subjects to reflect upon their own premises with full awareness of the inevitable gaps and lacks in the self-consciousness. In literature it is the ability of work of art to refer to its own techniques, its own process of creation and its own fictional status. Thus self-reflexivity forms a certain meta-level of metaliterature, metafiction and metapoetics. The key visual metaphor for this meta-operation is the mirror within the fictional work, which generates a kind of double coded structure and produces the effect of mise en abyme. The master devices for self-reflexivity are figure out by Borges: the mirror, the text within a text; the contamination of reality and dream; time-travelling, and the Doppelgänger. The crucial philosophical concepts we will try to differentiate from self-reflexivity are: self-referentiality, recursion, reflection, autopoiesis.
